The Challenge of Donating Clothes

Recently, I tried to find a place where I could donate good-condition, clean, used clothing for toddlers and women.  I did not want these items to be sold but given to people in need.  We're so often being told on TV, the internet and in newspapers that the need to help homeless and those escaping domestic violence is as great as ever.  Yet I had the hardest time finding a place that would take these items.  Either they don't actually handle this king of thing, or they have no space to store it, or they only take NEW items.  Sometimes, a place would say that another agency takes this and gives me that referral.  But then I get the same kinds of responses from that referral.  So it's either use them as rags or take them to the Goodwill to be sold, I guess.  Seems like such a waste.
